About the band

Beyond the Lake

Melbourne based duo, Beyond the Lake features Anita Quayle on electric cello and Nick Delaney on electric guitar. Together they create ethereal, dreamlike soundscapes to soothe the soul. Utilising various effects and live looping they produce blissful textural music, providing a calming ambiance suitable for sleep, meditation, yoga, reading, and restlessness.

Their collaboration developed organically during the numerous 2020 Covid lockdowns in Melbourne.

Nick and Anita began live-streaming a series of improvisations called “Music for Sleep”, as a way of helping those struggling with the pandemic.

During that time, they performed over 50 live streams and released two live albums, “Music for Sleep Volumes 1 and 2”.

Beyond the Lake released their first studio-produced album, “Coming Home”, in April 2022. This record is a sonic and compositional expansion of selections from their live stream improvisations. The variety of instrumentation and sounds - piano, orchestral strings, brass, and field recordings of nature - reveal a deep richness that will take the listener on a beautiful journey.

Beyond the Lake were awarded the 2022 Creative Victoria 'Music Works’ grant, to record their next body of work with 9 Victorian based musicians from staggeringly creative and diverse backgrounds.

Anita Quayle is a contemporary cellist and composer with a flair for the unconventional. She trained at the Victorian College of the Arts to pursue artistic excellence and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Contemporary Music. During her 25 years in the industry, Anita has performed live and collaborated with a vast array of musical icons and artists, such as Eddie Perfect, Russell Morris, Ainslie Wills, Thando, Nat Bartsch, Mindy Meng Wang; dancer Alya Manzart (Chunky Move) and play writer Adam Cass, to name a few. In 2019 Monash University commissioned Anita to compose and record music to promote The MLIVE season, a diverse program of events connecting audiences through extraordinary live experiences, directed by Paul Grabowsky.

Anita co-directs the ensemble Melbourne Amplified Strings. Together with violinist Xani Kolac, they explore the versatility of amplified string instruments, electronic effects and live looping. Anita is also a musical collaborator with The Knowing Project, directed by Grammy Award winner Lamine Sonko. Musically the project pushes boundaries to fuse the styles of West African, contemporary classical and jazz.
